Tiffany Dow asked:

As the economy continues to go through major upheaval, banks are becoming increasingly reluctant to loan money – even to each other! The lending boom in which banks and lending institutions loaned money indiscriminately has led to a huge rise in home foreclosures, financial upheaval, and near disaster.

The $700 billion bailout has been turned down, and the everyday person is left to wonder, “What’s next?” It’s true – there may very well be a new bailout proposal that might pass in the future and it keeps happening – first the car industry, then the credit and banking industry. Expect more bailout proposals in the coming years.

And as with everything, this financial crisis will pass. But what is bound to linger is the fact that right now, and most likely in the future, it will be very difficult to get a loan for anything unless you have a good credit bureau report.

The days of securing a loan even with bad credit are over. If you want to finance a car, a home, a boat, a pool for the back yard or much of anything else, you must have good credit! So what do you do if your credit is less than stellar?

How are you ever going to be able to finance anything ever again? Your first step has got to be to repair your credit and make sure your credit bureau reports are correct. This might take a while to do, but if you get started now, you’ll be in good shape for future purchases on credit. Here are the credit bureau report repair tips you will need to use:

1.) Get a copy of each of your credit bureau reports from the three major credit bureaus – Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Without your credit reports, you can’t move forward with fixing your credit.

2.) Review each report thoroughly. If you see errors, make a note of them. If any reports are missing good credit information, make a note of those as well.

3.) At this point it will be handy to start a filing system, perhaps folders, for each creditor that you need to contact to either fix faulty information or to add favorable information to you credit reports. You can keep your notes, letters you write to creditors and reporting agencies and other important information organized this way.

4.) If there are errors or omissions in your credit bureau reports, write letters to both the reporting bureaus and the creditors involved and provide them with as much detailed information as possible. You will want to include copies of any supporting documents and you might even want to include a copy of the credit report with the item in question circled if you are requesting a correction in a reporting error.

5.) Once you’ve contacted your creditors and the bureaus in writing, get copies of your credit reports again (you should wait 30 to 60 days to give them time to correct their errors). If the corrections you’ve requested aren’t showing, write them again. It may be necessary to repeat this step a few times – the squeaky wheel will get greased most quickly.

6.) If you don’t get the changes you’ve requested, you can contact the Federal Trade Commission and make your case known to them. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, they can help you get results.

7.) Be sure that once you’ve fixed any errors or omissions, you keep monitoring your credit report on a regular basis and that you always manage your money wisely to keep your credit score top-notch.

Making certain that your credit report is accurately reporting your credit history is your first step to credit repair. By using these credit bureau report repair tips, you will be forming the foundation for rebuilding your credit.

Gary

William S Bailey asked:

While it is possible living without a good credit score, it will certainly make your life much harder. All of us need it in order to buy or rent a home, car, have a credit card etc.

Credit bureaus hold the keys of our credit score. There are only a few credit bureaus in the US and through them all our reports are processed. They handle all the information that any of your creditors submits to them and by using this information your credit report is created.

In case that your credit history is not so good, you will have to start with a credit repair. To do this you are going to have to study how to interact and deal with credit bureaus.

1. First thing that you need to do is to find out exactly which credit bureau contains your file. It is very simple, just take a look at one of the rejection letters that you have received when you applied for credit. In the letter besides other information will be stated which bureau provided has provided your credit report.

2. For the next step you are going to need to get your credit report. It is free to obtain it once per year or every time your credit application has been denied. Be aware that sometimes credit companies can imply that you should always pay for a credit report, but in fact you have to pay for it only in case that you want it right away.

Credit bureaus are basically information collectors and sellers. Because of that you should never provide them with any information that you are not legally obliged to do. And by the law the only info you need to provide is: name, legal address and your social security number.

In some cases bureaus will request of you to provide a social security card copy and a copy of a document that proves your current address, this will happen only in case that your address is different from the one they have on your file.

Sometimes they can also ask you for a copy of your drivers license as proof of your address, just send them a copy of some bill with your address on it. Credit bureaus are the owners of numerous collection agencies, and in case that you have credit problems you should provide them with the smallest amount of info you legally can. Otherwise they can use it to harass you with it.

3. When you get it, check it out carefully for any mistakes. If there are some mistakes in your report, send a letter to the credit bureau in which you request that those mistakes be removed from your report.

Credit bureaus are obligated by law to prove that any item on your report is correct, if they can not do that within 30 days limit, then they must remove it. This is, in most cases, the thing that many credit repair companies will do for you and they are going to charge you dearly for it.

Many times negative items are several years old and hard to verify so they have to be removed from your credit report. You should know that you can save a lot of money if you decide to go through this process alone.

You will need a lot of patience, time and willingness to learn but it can be done. Besides you are going to learn a lot about finances in the process and it can be of great help to you in the future.

Julie

Scott Paul asked:

It seems these days there are hundreds and hundreds of sites that claim to be able to get you your free credit report with no strings attached. However this is not the case. Most site will actually have you enter your credit card information and have you commit to purchasing some kind of product from them before having you get you credit report. Granted some sites can be very helpful and paying a little extra may not be a bad thing if you can afford it, but it sure can be annoying if you are just looking to get your normal free credit report and having to jump through lots and lots of hoops to get it.

Here are a few tips on where to go to find a free credit report without a credit card. First thing to note is that no matter where you go you are going to be asked for information to prove your identity, however this doesn’t mean you need to give out your credit card information. The main thing to remember is that you are guaranteed a free credit report every year from one of each of the three credit bureaus.

You will need to give your name, birth date, social security number, previous addresses if you have moved, employment history, and some security questions. If you go online and make sure you go directly to a legit credit bureau site to make sure you don’t have to jump through hoops. Otherwise you can always go through a toll free number, or mail in directly to one of the credit bureaus.

Leonard

Tim Gorman asked:

Credit reports provide great details about a person including name, birth date, Social security number, home address, how payments are made, income, employment history, home ownership, previous address, court cases, judgments, and bankruptcy and foreclosure records.

Above all it gives details about a person’s credit history. These include all the creditors with balances and accounts that are closed or in collections. It will also indicate if there are any late payments, and any other irregularity. In addition it will also list the requests for that credit report by creditors during the past year and requests for credit reports including those by employers for the past two years.

These reports are maintained by three nationwide credit bureaus which use slightly different sources to compile the information. Based on the information they have credit bureaus calculate a figure called the credit score. The three credit bureaus Equifax, Transunion, Experian use different formulas to arrive at their score. The credit score can be considered a mathematical way of determining the likelihood of the borrower paying back a loan.

This information can be accessed by creditors, insurers, employers, and others who have been legitimately allowed access subject to conditions through The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). It is clear that accurate information in the credit report is important to everyone concerned not only for the person about whom it is concerned but to anyone else who may want to rely on it for decision making. As such it is important to understand how the credit report is compiled and the accuracy of the information and sources on which that compilation is made.

It is important to know how and at what frequency credit information reaches the credit bureau. On examination of their procedure, it is clear that frequency of reporting varies depending on the creditor. While some creditors will report any changes in the customers’ balances every day, others will report once a month or at longer periods. This is mainly due to efficacy reasons, since with most people there will not be much of a change in credit balances. Because of that creditors will only report if there are any changes in the credit balances. This therefore means that for some people their credit report will get updated about once a month while others may not see any change in their credit reports for 3 or 6 months. On the other hand creditors will report late payments and other negative activities quite promptly.

Frank

Lending and credit companies use your credit information to determine if they will approve you or not and at what interest rate you will pay.

Many people are recognizing the importance of checking their own credit report to verify its accuracy and to make sure that they know where they stand in the credit world. Until they begin the process to obtain a copy of their credit report, some people do not realize that they actually have three credit reports instead of just one. The three main credit bureaus keep separate credit records from one another and produce their own credit reports. Instead of the credit bureaus working together and sharing information among themselves like some people may think, they are actually competitors. That is why the information provided on one credit report will more than likely be different from the information provided on the credit report from another credit bureau. Therefore, it is recommended to check your credit report from all three credit bureaus in order to see the complete picture.

There are a couple of options to checking all three of your credit reports. You can contact each of the credit bureaus individually to request a copy. Or you can go through one of the many companies that provide a 3-in-1 credit report like [http://www.credit-report-credit-score.com]. Obtaining a 3-in-1 credit report is usually more convenient and user friendly to the consumer compared to requesting individual copies.

Verifying the data on all three of your credit reports is the only way to know that the information that potential lenders and creditors are evaluating you on is correct. When considering you for a loan, some lenders will pull your credit report from only one or two of the credit bureaus while other lenders will pull your credit report from all three. It is always a good idea to check your credit reports BEFORE applying for your next big purchase. Covering your bases beforehand can often times save you a lot of time and hassle during the application process.

————————-

Note: This article may be freely reproduced as long as the authors bio paragraph at the bottom of this article is included, the article is published “as is” (unedited) and all URL’s are made active hyperlinks with no syntax changes.

————————-

Delores

Tim Gorman asked:

Many people who look into their reports find that their credit information has errors and those errors usually affect your credit negatively.

Maintaining an accurate score sometimes requires us to be pro-active, and we must write letters to remove information off our credit report. These are sent to the big 3 credit bureaus. Although in many cases the first thing most people want to do is to call the Credit Bureau and tell them off, this would be counterproductive. Instead the best method would be to sit down and write a credit report dispute letter.

You should read your credit report, take notes as to what you consider the problem areas are and think whether what’s on the report could actually be true. If, in finding that what’s on the report is false, you need to think through how you’re going to word your letters to remove info off credit report. You’re going to have to send a copy of this letter to each of the three main credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. Be polite and state facts as you see them. See example letter below.

Dear (credit bureau name here),

After looking at a copy of my credit file, I found that it contained erroneous information. I would like to dispute this information and request a correction. I am concerned about the information that you have put in my credit report as it could seriously impair the credit rating I enjoy with lending institutions.

You have not (state the problem here).

Be sure to include the month, and the date, and the name of the business.

I am enclosing a photocopy of my cancelled check as proof of my payment. Hopefully, this will correct the accuracy of my credit file. As you are certainly aware of, the credit bureaus are only allowed to use accurate information in a consumer’s credit file.

Thank you for correcting the above errors to insure that it doesn’t impair my personal credit. Please contact me as soon as the correction has been made and my credit report is again accurate. Please send a copy of my credit report to: (place mailing address here).

Yours,

(Your name)

Be sure to include your full name as listed in your credit report, address, Social Security number, copy of your driver’s license, copy of the credit report, and copy of your proof, i.e. cancelled check.

Be sure to retain a copy of whatever you send to each credit bureau. Make a note of the date that you mail your letters to remove info off credit report. Using certified or registered mail is a good idea, as this will give you proof of the mailing date.

Dennis
